I can ask a question, what is the purpose for a Netbook? Slow, awful keyboard with keys too close together, small screen. Yet people purchase them.

An iPad to me is a device to do probably 90% of what most people at home do on their computers in a device you can carry around and relax while doing so.

It's not for everyone but not a bad device either. I get tired of people calling it an iPhone. It does not even make phone calls! It's more like the touch. Give it a chance. I hear there are a lot of things planned for the iPad like Video calls and handwriting recognition.

The iPad might not be for you but let it at least make it to market and lets see what Apple has planned for it. I have heard many more features are coming in the future.

I will always use computers for my work but the iPad would come in handy when I am trying to rest but still read that news headline, watch a video, listen to music and just sit back and have fun. And remember this is from a person (ME) who hates Cloud Computing and all your data and apps on the internet. At least the iPad has Apps on the machine!

I guess it may have some place but it seems it's usefullness is limited. AAPL stock IS starting to rebound from it's drop just after the iPad intro. It seems to have gained back half of its loss so far. I don't work any more so the buisiness aspects of this are not applicable to me. (i don't own an iPod either)
With a NetBook I get compact size, A REAL keyboard. The iPad's is small like the netbooks but virtual, not real unless you get the docking keyboard. Then you need to carry around 2 pieces of gear.
Netbook I get MY apps to use with my settings, not a whole new app to figure out or game to start all over again. on top of already paying for the one on HAL: and having to buy it all over again for the iPad. Plus Web and eMail access.
I have OSX configured to my liking. And can do the same on a netbook, transferring them and settings between HAL and a netbook. All of my contacts in Address Book, Games in the Games folder. It recognizes my camera and GraphiConverter auto pulls pix for me. iTunes, VLC, Eric's Solitaire, Quark, a DVD player/burner.
Lots of software that I'll have to repurchase. I know, I know.. the same arguement that PC users tout for not switching to Mac. "Gotta Buy Software All Over Again"
Perhaps I'm old school when it comes to new tech. I NEVER buy a car the first couple years that it's been introduced. New tech the same. To many failures in the past. To many bugs in new projects. Then again, the iPad may fit a niche market. I'll watch this but still think a Small portable full service computer from AAPL would fit in their product line. Oh, and reasonably priced too.
Just my opinion

And you have a right to that opinion and I share it to a large degree. I see what they are trying to do with cloud computing and it bugs me. I am VERY old school in my computing and many other things and see your point completely. I am just happy that so far, the iPad has data and apps on the device and not in the cloud!

I have a netbook and it's handy to take with me when setting up networks due to it's small size. The IPad unless they add some means can not do what the netbook can as it has no Ethernet port that I need to set up a new router with WiFi disabled. If the iPad had that feature I would purchase one.

I know the netbook has a real keyboard but it's so cramped. My Acer Aspire's left Shift Key is tiny and I never hit it and have to keep correcting over and over. Some other netbooks like the Lenovo Ideapad have a much better keyboard that I can type on pretty well.

What brand and model is your netbook Scooter? How is the keyboard on it?

I don't have one but my Daughter does. Don't know the brand. Wally-World Special for $100. All of the netbooks run windows and as such wont work for me. That's why I was hoping for a NetBook outta Cupdertino. It's like my HP/intel PC. IF there was a way to run OSX on them, I'd consider a netbook. Everywhere I go, Hackintosh discussions are STRICTLY Forbidden.
I can't even get HAL and my HP(W7) to talk on any kind of networking solution. So I run the two of them autonomously and transfer files via Thumbdrive.
